Interesting. The book didn’t really work for me — I was put off by the writing which wasn’t really my style, and parts of the story felt cliched to me. But I think the problem stems at least partly from the mood I was in at the time — it wasn’t the right time for me to read that book. I can see why others would enjoy it!

I am in complete agreement with your excellent review. And I, too, want to read something else of Enright’s and see if this is her usual style.
There is always so much gloom and doom in the Irish literature – somehow that seems to be almost a requirement!
