Here’s an abstract of my literary doings in June.
Books Read
The Book of Lost Things, by John Connolly – 6/5/2008
The Invention of Hugo Cabret, by Brian Selznick – 6/7/2008
Farworld: Water Keep, by J. Scott Savage – 6/10/2008 (review to be posted on 7/18/2008)
Persepolis, by Marjane Satrapi – 6/11/2008
The Goose Girl, by Shannon Hale – 6/15/2008
On Chesil Beach, by Ian McEwan – 6/17/2008
Persepolis 2, by Marjane Satrapi – 6/24/2008
Admit One: A Journey into Film – 6/27/2008
Anne of Green Gables – 6/30/2008 (reread)
June Total = 9
Year-to-Date Total = 29
I read four five-star books this month: The Invention of Hugo Cabret, The Goose Girl, On Chesil Beach, and Anne of Green Gables (reread). The four are so different; it’s hard to choose a favorite. On Chesil Beach was probably my favorite for its complexity and discovery of Ian McEwan. The Goose Girl and Anne of Green Gables are in the reread pile, and The Invention of Hugo Cabret is in the to-be-read-to-my-future-children pile. Of the other books I read this month, there was one four-star book, two three-star books, and two two-star books. In all, a balanced reading month.
Book Club
The Goose Girl, by Shannon Hale – Meeting: 6/26/2008
Our selection for this month, The Goose Girl, was universally loved by the members of my book club. We enjoyed a discussion about the mother’s motives, Ani’s ability to communicate with birds and the wind, and the comparisons with the Grimm’s fairy tale the book was based on. The selection for next month is Stardust, by Neil Gaiman.
Challenges
I completed two challenges this month!
The Novella Challenge – 4/6 [ends 9/1/2008]
The Wind-Up Book Chronicles Challenge – 0/4 [ends 11/15/2008]
The Classics Challenge 2008 – 0/6 [ends 12/31/2008]
The Graphic Novels Challenge – 3/3 COMPLETE!
Celebrating 100 Years of Anne Mini-Challenge – 1/1 COMPLETE!
The Pulitzer Project – 6/91 [perpetual]
The Newbery Project – 12/87 (+7 Honor books) [perpetual]
Other
In other goings on on this blog, I purchased my own domain: http://thebluestockings.com! Poetry Tuesday was discontinued due to a colossal lack of interest. In its stead, I introduced Blue Leafs, one-page book summaries for reading groups and book clubs. Download the first one here: Blue Leaf: On Chesil Beach. I posted about book reviews and “About” pages and updated my about page. I won a copy of Driving Sideways, by Jess Riley, from Booking Mama! I completed the “New Classics” meme, based on Entertainment Weekly’s list of the 100 new classics published since 1983. Finally, I succumbed to the peer pressure and formally joined Dewey’s Weekly Geeks.
June was a fairly successful month around here! Thanks to everyone who reads and comments.

Looks like you had a productive month! I’m going to add a few of your reads to my TBR list.
Thanks for stopping by my blog. It sounds like you’re a fellow reader. Nine books in 1 month!!
I really liked The Goose Girl, too. I read the next one, too (Enna Burning). If you liked The Goose Girl, you’ll probably like that one to.
Congratulations on winning Booking Mama’s contest! I shall draw you something purty in the book. :)
Wow, you have had a very productive month. I have many of the same books on my tbr pile.
Greetings,
I came across your blog post regarding book clubs. I’m Jason Pfeifer, and some friends and I started an online service called Booksprouts, that allows people to create book clubs, choose books, invite friends, and read and discuss online. We are currently seeking people who might be interested in trying the site out, and giving us feedback on the service. We also welcome people who have blogs to write reviews of the site (good or bad) as a means of feedback. We’re really excited to hear what people think, and on how we can improve the site. It’s 100% free, by the way. Please feel free to check it out.
