I read Pope Joan a while ago... the book itself is good. BUT, the author is full of her own self-importance (I can say this confidently because I used to work for the literary agent who represented her). But that said, Cross did an amazing job of doing her research and writing the book.

I'll be interested in what you have to say about Pope Joan. I was prejudiced against ever reading it years ago when, whatever book forum I happened to be on, someone would shill that book. They never stuck around to mention anything else they were reading so I came to the conclusion it was the author herself touting her work instead of a real reader who happened to love the book.
