Today’s semi-morbid meme:
What would you do if, all of a sudden, your favorite source of books was unavailable? Whether it’s a local book shop, your town library, or an internet shop … what would you do if, suddenly, they were out of business? Devastatingly, and with no warning? Where would you go for books instead? What would you do? If it was a local business you would try to help out the owners? Would you just calmly start buying from some other store? Visit the library in the next town instead? Would it be devastating? Or just a blip in your reading habit?
I buy most of my books at Borders or online for the sheer convenience, but I wouldn’t be terribly tragedized if either of those suddenly went out of business. However, I would be very sad if one of my favorite book haunts, Sam Weller’s or Powell’s Books went out of business. I love the feel of used bookstores. While I love new bookstores and libraries, there is just something about repositories of used and oft-loved books. Even though I would be sad if some of my favorite book sources were gone, I would have more than enough books here in my house to last me for several years. (I think all the book bloggers have this safety net.)

I agree with you about having more than enough books to get me through several years. I like used bookstores, too. I like feeling like I might find a treasure in there that someone has missed.
I’ve got a full response on my blog, but I agree with you about used bookstores – I don’t understand people who are squeamish about second-hand books, I love them.
I missed this question last week being out of town, but I would be devasted if the library suddenly came up missing. In fact, I think I would really be traumatized. IF that were to happen, I guess I’d be buying more books than I do already, and I’d be going to thrift stores and used bookstores online more often.
