Today’s meme is the opposite of last week’s meme:
What are your favourite final sentences from books? Is there a book that you liked specially because of its last sentence? Or a book, perhaps that you didn’t like but still remember simply because of the last line?
Let’s see. I do not specifically remember any ending lines. But, upon further research, here are some of my favorites from books I’ve read:
“So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.” (The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald)
“He was soon borne away by the waves and lost in darkness and distance.” (Frankenstein, by Mary Shelley)
“The old man was dreaming about the lions.” (The Old Man and the Sea, by Ernest Hemingway)
“Everything had gone right with me since he had died, but how I wished there existed someone to whom I could say that I was sorry.” (The Quiet American, by Graham Greene)
And the last line from the book I’m currently reading:
“I squared my shoulders and walked forward to meet my fate, with my destiny solidly at my side.” (New Moon, by Stephenie Meyer)
Probably the most famous last line, if the BTT posts are any indication, is that last line from The Great Gatsby. What do you think it is?

Oh I like this a lot! I think the last line is one of the most important in any book. Eventually you forget the first, but the last stays with you for a long time if well written.
You’ve come up with an impressive list.
Those are some great picks. I particularly like the one from Frankenstein.
Like I have mentioned in other blogs, I totally forgot about The great Gatsby. That’s such a beautiful line, like cinematography. Graham Greene is another favorite author of mine!
Oh, I forgot how perfect the last line of The Old Man and the Sea was… good choice! I like how you added the last line of what you’re currently reading. I might be afraid it would give something away, but I know you are rereading Moon! :)
The last line of my favorite book that I’ve read in the last year is this, ‘I felt my breathing, my face, my fingers, and I was dimly aware of an encroaching darkness. Were there flames, smoke, dust, battling troops, enormous suffering? I opened my eyes. .
Good line…
