Weekly Geeks is a weekly book blog community event where participating blogs complete a book- or blog-related activity posted and hosted by Dewey at The Hidden Side of a Leaf.
Magazines! This is an aspect of my reading habits that is rarely examined on this blog. Thanks to Dewey for choosing this topic. I currently subscribe to three magazines, and I tend to buy one more.
I subscribe. My favorite feature, of course, is the books section, but I also like the fiction section. I think my interest in this magazine says that I’m overly literate (or just overtly pretentious about my literacy). :o) I’ve only had the subscription for about six months, but I’ve read it for quite a few years off and on. I love the literary feeling this magazine evokes.
I subscribe. My favorite feature is called “Reader to Reader: Clever Ideas to Make Life Easier.” I think my interest in this magazine stems from my mother subscribing to it when I was a kid. Though there’s not really anything literary in this one, I like the home and family ideas. I’ve had the subscription for a couple of years now, but I’m thinking of letting it lapse.
I subscribe. This is a magazine published by my church. My favorite feature is called “The First Presidency Message.”
I read/purchase this magazine occasionally. I don’t really have a favorite feature, but my favorite issue tends to be the Oscar issue. I buy several copies each year to have on hand at my Oscar party. I also like to read any articles related to books, of course.
I also subscribe to a plethora of legal journals, reviews, and magazines as a result of my profession, but I won’t bore you with the titles and details.
Interestingly, my magazine habits do not really reflect my book reading habits. I tend to think of magazines as fluffier than books and therefore allow myself a few more guilty pleasures. What purpose do magazines play in your literary life?

I didn’t really feel like responding to the Weekly Geeks this week as the only magazine I read regularly is the Ensign!
I really loved the New Yorker and had a subscription one year, but I found I never could get through an issue in just one week: and then I was behind. Because I loved it all, I wanted to read every page of it, every week!
I may give The New Yorker a try again at this different stage of my life. I really do like it!
Ugh, the New Yorker. I would love that magazine if it was a monthly instead of a weekly. But with it coming every week I just feel like I have no time to read anything else. Or I get behind and feel like I have to read the past issues before I can start the current one, and then it’s just a downward spiral… A few months ago I subscribed to The Nation, also a weekly, and I’m having the same problem. :-P
I miss my subscription to The New Yorker. I subscribed for awhile but decided to give it up because I wasn’t finding time to read the magazine as often as I liked. I tend to favor books to magazines and my magazines end up piling up until a magazine mood strikes.
Like you, I do subscribe to work related journals as well. I like to stay on top of the latest trends and research.
I agree with the comment that magazines are a bit of a guilty pleasure and can be a bit on the fluffy side. They are just for fun.
Lots of people have been listing The Ensign in their magazine list, and that’s making me feel guilty ’cause I never got mine renewed this year! I need to do that! :)
