I’m hosting a challenge!! As I mentioned on Wednesday, I’ll be hosting the February 2009 Bookworms Carnival, and the theme is Literature and Film. February is always a big movie month in my life, culminating in the Oscar telecast and my annual Oscar party. Anyway, as part of the celebration, I thought I’d host a challenge.

RULES
1. Challenge runs from September 1, 2008 to February 28, 2009.
2. Read 5 books that have been made into movies.
3. Then watch at least 2 of the movie adaptations of the works you read.
4. Your list may change at any time and may include overlaps with other challenges.
5. Sign up after you’ve posted about this challenge using Mr. Linky here.
6. Check in around the first of each month to find activities and giveaways for participants.
7. Link to your reviews and posts using the second Mr. Linky here.

OFFICIAL CHALLENGE PAGE
I’ve set up a challenge headquarters page. It includes all the official stuff: the button, the rules, links to lists of qualifying books, the sign-up Mr. Linky, and the review/post Mr. Linky. Head on over there and sign on up!

Blindness was made into a movie? I didn’t know that. What a fun challenge to start. I better start making my list. Thanks for hosting this.

Confuzzled Books August 15, 2008 at 12:08 pm

Coraline and Tale of Despereaux didn’t come out yet right? Or did they?

Jessica August 15, 2008 at 1:08 pm

Blindness, Coraline, and The Tale of Despereaux (and The Road) will all be released in the next few months!

unfinishedperson August 15, 2008 at 11:14 pm

I will be joining, Jessica. I’ll have to decide later today and return to your page, and of course, I’ll give it a plug over at my blog too. How could I not? :)

Kathy August 17, 2008 at 3:56 pm

This sounds like fun, but I’m not sure I can squeeze it in since I’m doing another reading challenge and have a stack of ARCs. Hmm – maybe when my son goes back to school.

Debbie August 18, 2008 at 4:03 pm

I’m excited!! I’m going to be thinking of what to put on my list.

Matt August 18, 2008 at 4:17 pm

Like I said, I cannot wait for Blindness to open, in San Francisco, on September 11. I’ll also read Marley and Me, which will open in October.

Natasha @ Maw Books August 18, 2008 at 7:37 pm

Oh man! I CAN NOT resist this challenge. One, I love to read. Two, I love to watch movies. I was looking through all the books I’ve reviewed since I started my blog and a LOT of them have been made into movies. And then better yet, I looked at my already existing challenges and already have books that have been made into movies, so PERFECT! I’ll get my list up soon.

Alyce August 19, 2008 at 9:31 am

I don’t know if I have time for this, but I will think about trying to squeeze it in because it sounds fun. Although I did think of the perfect cheaters list:

HP and Sorcerer’s Stone
HP and Chamber of Secrets
HP and Prizoner of Azkaban
HP and Goblet of Fire
HP and Order of Phoenix

Not high literature or anything, but all books I’ve read and seen the movies for.

If I did this challenge however, I would actually want to read something I haven’t read yet. :)

StacyH August 20, 2008 at 11:12 am

Found you through some other blogs and I’d like to participate! My list of 5 keeps changing … but I’m very excited about the challenege!

K August 23, 2008 at 6:44 am

Loving this challenge!
Am going to buy my books right now.

My list is up. I don’t know while Mr. Linky always has me smiling afterward, but I guess that’s all right. I’m happy to be here. :)

Molly August 25, 2008 at 12:21 am

A great reading/movie challenge combo! I’ve listed my selections on my blog. Thanks for setting this up!

Nan August 26, 2008 at 11:50 am

I’ve just posted on my blog about joining the challenge, but had trouble with the Mr Linky fellow. Here is the address for the posting:

Nicole August 26, 2008 at 5:08 pm

Thanks for stopping by my blog. I think I’ll join this challenge. I’m going to start thinking of my list and then I’ll post about it.

I know The Ruins by Scott Smith will be one of them. I’m reading that for another challenge and my husband is waiting for me to read it so we can watch the movie together (he just finished reading it).

(Judy) Intergalactic Bookworm August 27, 2008 at 7:47 pm

This will be a great challenge for me. My library is going to be closed Sunday and Monday for the Labor Day weekend and then it will be closed the following 3 day weekend for a local festival. My mom and I will be checking out a lot of DVDs this Saturday and I will look for book titles. I will be probably watching the movie before I read the book! Judy

Alyce August 29, 2008 at 1:18 pm

I signed up for the challenge, and no, I’m not reading the Harry Potter books! (See my first comment above) I’m very excited to be a part of this challenge! :)

I am reading “Jane Eyre” next month for the Classics Book Club at 5 minutes for books. They announce the next book at the end of September and if it doesn’t fit the challenge I will find another book to read. Most classics have been made into movies though, so it should be a nice overlap.

Care September 2, 2008 at 5:40 am

I’m going to attempt to read books that had movies win Best Picture. plus a few more. GREAT IDEA FOR A CHALLENGE! I’m also going to include Tale of Devereaux – I forgot about that one.

sadie September 2, 2008 at 1:58 pm

I’m in. I need an incentive to see more movies. Thanks! ~sadie

Anne September 2, 2008 at 2:33 pm

Since it’s also Kay Francis month on TCM this seems ideally timed for a literary / cinematic challenge. Thanks for hosting it! I have no idea yet what new books I’ll read since I”ve read and seen so many (Jane Austen and Tolstoi, for example) but I’ll come up with some. And I look forward to expounding on movies I thought were excellent (re)tellings of the material. Thanks again!

Colleen September 2, 2008 at 5:54 pm

I think this is just such a fun idea. I look forward to enjoying some great books and movies!

Anne September 3, 2008 at 1:46 pm

I’ve posted my answers to the meme – at http://yarnsandyarns.blogspot.com/2008/09/lit-ficks-challenge.html.

Kim September 6, 2008 at 2:00 pm

Do you have to have a website to participate in these challenges? I love to read and have written some reviews, but I’m not really a blogger.

Amber September 6, 2008 at 5:18 pm

What a great idea. I see so many movies and read so many books each year that this was the perfect way to combine the two interests. Thanks!

Kelly September 7, 2008 at 12:44 am

I would love to do this. I have no idea how this Mr. Linky thing works though. :( Oh the shame! Anyway, hopefully I can figure it out. Coraline should be incredible. I loved the book. I would really like to see someone do “Neverwhere” or “American Gods.” Anyway, great list. I’d love to get involved. :)

Whitney September 15, 2008 at 11:39 am

Great idea for a challenge! Thanks for hosting.

Michelle September 18, 2008 at 9:01 pm

I am new to reading challenges and am really excited to do this one. I am signing up a little late though. All the more reason to get started now!!!!

Nan September 19, 2008 at 12:12 pm

Just a quick note to say I’ve decided not to do the challenge. I’ve got too many other books on my tbr shelves. :<)

Suey September 24, 2008 at 8:14 pm

I just wanted to let you know that I’ve finally realized that I have to join this challenge! Many of the books that my f2f book club plans on reading have movie adaptations, and I think we will watch clips as part of our meetings. But you know I’ll also watch the whole thing before hand! Anyway, I’ll get a post up soon and officially join before long.

Jan in Edmonds September 24, 2008 at 8:19 pm

I’ve got five in mind and will post the books on my website. Thanks so much for hosting this Jessica.

Natasha @ Maw Books October 1, 2008 at 4:20 pm

Hey Jessica! I’ve already read six but want to keep going! Can I cheat and do 10 -15 books instead? I swear I didn’t mean to finish up so quickly!

Book Club Girl October 2, 2008 at 9:37 pm

I know I’m late to the game here, but this sounds great!

The Brainlair October 4, 2008 at 2:52 pm

I’m going to do:
Jumper by Steven Gould
Lord of the Flies by William Golding
Hoot by Cal Hiaasen
The Princess Bride by William Goldman
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl

Hope it’s not too late!!

Caitlin October 4, 2008 at 7:32 pm

Hi Jessica!
I just stumbled upon your blog and your challenge the other day and both are wonderful! I know the challenge is a month underway but I’m ready for this! I need a good balance from school life.
Thanks for hosting this!

Jenny October 5, 2008 at 7:52 am

I read Skipping Christmas for my first book. This was fun. It is by John Grisham a fairly short easy read. I’m looking forward to watching the movie. The other 4 books I’ll read are posted on my blog.

Chris October 5, 2008 at 9:45 pm

Just signed up! My blog — Big Book, Big Evil — focuses on the novella. So all my Lit Flicks Challenge books will be novellas. Here’s my blog specifically about this one …

Please, stop by and leave a comment.

The Brainlair October 6, 2008 at 7:37 pm

Just finished Jumper by Steven Gould. Read my review of the book here:

Check back later for the movie review!

Jenny D. October 6, 2008 at 10:56 pm

I know I’m starting late, but I know I’ll be able to finish. This is such a fun idea. Now I just need to decide which book to pick up first. I’m thinking THE TIME TRAVELER’S WIFE.

Toni October 7, 2008 at 2:39 pm

Hi! I haven’t ever done an online challenge and my blogging technical skills are in need, but I am excited. I think I have linked correctly. What a great idea!

Toni October 7, 2008 at 4:31 pm

Hi there!! I am on the second list for reviews and posts.. but not on the list for sign up… My name appears but keeps leaving. :) Any suggestions.

Jessica October 7, 2008 at 4:36 pm

Toni – I fixed your link on the sign up list. Thanks for joining!

Toni October 7, 2008 at 4:46 pm

Oh thank you.. and when I get my list of five, do I put them on my blog or here? :) Sorry in advance for being high maintenance. :)

Jessica October 7, 2008 at 7:05 pm

Toni – You can leave your list here, but most people list them on their blog. In fact, I believe that the link I added to the “sign up” Mister Linky is a link to your list. Whenever you post a review, just add a link to that specific review to the second Mister Linky. Thanks!

unfinishedperson October 7, 2008 at 10:36 pm

My list keeps changing as I mentioned elsewhere in comments to you, but I love this challenge. Just added on other page: review of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. Next up: The Freedom Writers’s Diary and movie.

#70
Title: Call of the Wild
Author: Jack London
Genre: novella
Challenges: 100+, 101 Books in 1001 Days, Book Around the States, 2008/2009 Unread Authors, Lit Flicks
Rating: A
No. of CTs/Playing time: 2/2
Pub. 1903
Dates listened to: 10/7/08 – 10/8/08

From the back cover – “Stewart Granger reads Jack London’s famous novel about the dog ‘Buck’, who inherited the looks and cunning of a Shepherd from his mother and the huge size and strength of his St. Bernard father. The story is set against the background of the wild and frozen frontiers of Alaska, where
At the turn of the century thousands of men rushed in search of gold. These men wanted dogs, and the dogs they valued were strong dogs to pull the heavy sledges and fit dogs to survive the freezing winters of the Klondike.”

I was surprised that I’d never read Jack London before. What a great story of a dog in the wilds of Alaska, going from one owner to another until he found Thorndike, a man he truly loved. He performed one feat after another, fighting other dogs, wolves, moose and man until one day he came back to camp and his life changed forever.

Michelle October 15, 2008 at 10:26 am

So I have read four out of seven of my books and decided to watch movies to all of them. Why not? I am really enjoying this challenge and am looking forward to more!!

Wendymoon October 15, 2008 at 4:44 pm

Count me in too! My picks (and some other suggestions) are here: http://moviewings.blogspot.com/2008/10/book-vs-movie-is-book-always-better.html

Marina October 22, 2008 at 10:59 pm

I’m in, if a little late. Hopefully will have plenty of time to catch up when the TV shows go on holiday hiatus. Here’s where I’ll have my list (soon):

Jan in Edmonds November 3, 2008 at 9:09 pm

My reviews for Call of the Wild by Jack London, Slaughterhouse Five by Kurt Vonnegut, Rascal by Sterling North & Shiloh by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor are on my blog. Haven’t decided which ones to watch yet as movies. And have two more books to read – Peter Pan & Papillion.
