in Memes & Things

Today’s meme takes the form of a survey:

What was the last book you bought?

I bought three yesterday with birthday money: The Handmaid’s Tale, by Margaret Atwood; Utopia, by Sir Thomas More; and Enduring Love, by Ian McEwan

Name a book you have read MORE than once.

How can I count you, my beloved books? Here’s a few of the most-read contenders: Harriet the Spy, Pride and Prejudice, Anne of Green Gables, and One L.

Has a book ever fundamentally changed the way you see life? If yes, what was it?

Well, yes, of course. I think every book I read changes the way I see life. With each new book I experience a new perspective and therefore change the way I view life. (Sorry I can’t be more specific than that.)

How do you choose a book?

Like many of the other answerers, I choose books by a combination of things. I usually keep an eye out for books recommended in reviews and blogs. I also watch out for favorite authors, etc. And, I will pick up books with nice covers and pretty award foils, but it takes a little something extra to get me to read it.

Do you prefer fiction or non-fiction?

Definitely fiction. I have to ration my non-fiction intake because I have a hard time completing them.

What’s more important in a novel – beautiful writing or a gripping plot?

Um . . . both? If forced to choose I would take well-crafted plot over well-written writing.

Most loved/memorable character.

Can’t . . . pick . . . just . . . one! I do love my Elizabeth Bennett and my Harriet M. Welch.

Which book or books can be found on your nightstand at the moment?

Probably close to a hundred books are stacked in and on and around my nightstand. The next few in the TBR queue are Bleak House, by Charles Dickens; Dracula, by Bram Stoker, and The Handmaid’s Tale, by Margaret Atwood.

What was the last book you’ve read, and when was it?

I finished The Graveyard Book, by Neil Gaiman, last night!

Have you ever given up on a book half way in?

Yes, sadly. Most of them I intend to complete at some point. The most recent book I completely abandoned for good was Diary of a Bad Year.

What was the last book you read? (We ask this question of all prospective employees of my firm.)

I’m excited to hear what you have to say about Enduring Love.

There was a time when I would push on and finish any book I started. I’m stubborn that way. But lately, I’ve come to realize that time is precious, and there are so many good books waiting for me.

Come see my answers and enter my book giveaways.

I have to give you props on The Handmaid’s Tale and OneL – both are awesome books. And now that I work full time and have a baby, I am so picky with what I read and if a book doesn’t catch me right away, I toss it. I have so little time for reading, that I need to be drawn in right away.

I’m going to post away now!

And the most recent book I read was Tom Perrotta’s Little Children.

I certainly pick up books with nice covers, such as ones with a cute labrador, like The Art of Racing in the Rain. I hate movie tie-in covers. *sigh*

Handmaid’s Tale was creepy, but I have thoroughly enjoyed reading it. Maragret Atwood writes with such poised sense of time and a very crisp style. I am looking forward to reading your opinion on the book.

This question pretty much sums up many of the past ones.

I mostly read fiction, although once in a while a non-fiction, like history or a biography will interest me.

My favorite genres are historical fiction, foreign literature, and classics.

My complete answer.

I love Atwood. I hope you love Handmaid’s Tail as much as I do. Then go get Oryx and Crake or anything else she wrote.

Another Anne fan! I’m glad to hear it :)

Ahh, Anne! There’s a magnolia tree outside the window of my childhood bedroom that we always called the Snow Queen. And One L hit me like a ton of bricks the first time I read it! Scott Turow’s other books never lived up to it:)

It may be dangerous to overly praise a book for someone, but Handmaid’s Tale is a chilling work of genius. I hope you enjoy it! Pride and Prejudice can never be read too much, can it? Bleak House is one I want to get to sometime soon, as well as revisiting Anne of Green Gables.

Hi there! I read The Handmaid’s Tale with my book club a few months back. It is good. I just got another Atwood book at a book sale this weekend. (Blind Assasin?) After reading Handmaid’s Tale I am interested this author. Handmaid’s Tale is a bit eerie, but really well written. Enjoy. I am interested in your thoughts. :) Toni

One L was a great book that I totally forgot about, I read it so long ago!

I like that you ask potential employees about their most recently read book. What happens if the answer is something like “How to build a bomb” or something equally wacky??
