OCTOBER MEME
For October, we’re going to focus on a theme. After all, it’s October and time for all things scary and horrific. Thus, for an extra entry in this month’s giveaway, I would like you to post about your favorite spooky books and related movies. You may want to answer some of the following questions in your post:
- Which medium (book or film) is better at creeping you out?
- Do you have a favorite Halloween-ish book that you read every year or movie that you watch every year?
- What is your favorite scary movie adaptation?
- What is your favorite scary book that has been made into a movie?

MY THOUGHTS
When I think of Halloween reading, I immediately think of Edgar Allan Poe. While I have other favorite creepy books, Poe just sums it up for me. I try to reread at least one or two Poe stories every October. My favorites are The Cask of Amontillado and The Tale-Tell Heart.
Halloween movies are a little different. I don’t always enjoy being creeped out. This Halloween, though, I’m going to see at least one scary movie based on a creepy book: Rebecca, by Daphne du Maurier (directed by Alfred Hitchcock).
As for which medium is best at creeping me out – movies, hands down.

Cool! Thank you!!! I have Atonement checked out from the library at this very moment so it will be awesome to have my own copy! Thanks!
Natalie, thank YOU for participating! I’ll put your book in the mail tomorrow.
This is corny yet my favorite scarey book into movie is “Carrie”. I think it is because of the age I was when I read this book and then saw the movie….young and very impressionable!!! So it holds dear memories for me. Yet Ialso love all things Alfred Hitchcock and Stephen King as well!!!!
Thanks for what is going to be a fun month!

I’m with you, Poe and October go hand in hand. I enjoy both of those stories as well. I don’t know what my favorite is. My first ever experience with Poe was in junior high reading Masque of the Red Death and soon afterward I read Fall of the House of Usher, so both of those rank really high on my list.
I think movies and books can creep me out fairly equally depending on how they are written/filmed. Film is probably easier to get creeped out with though.
I was just thinking of Halloween reading and from the bottom of my shelf I unearthed this giant short story collection of Poe. I have always like The Fall of the House of Usher and The Black Cat.
When I was in junior high, they showed The Pit and the Pendulum
and I remember that being so totally scary! We were all screaming! “Course that was part of the fun of it.
The Shining is quite scary too. I’ve never read the book though.
And Jaws. Again, I’ve never read the book! But the movie is pretty scary… or was in it’s day.
