I'm sorry the book didn't quite live up to your expectations. And worry not, I won't hate you for not liking the illustrations :P I actually found this book very layered, more so than Coraline, for example, and that's one of the reasons why I loved it so much. But we can't all like everything the same way. I'm glad you still found it an enjoyable read :)

As much as I enjoy Gaiman's novels, I agree with you about the layers. The stories are great, but there's not always much depth to them. His comics work has much more going on; SANDMAN is one of my favourite graphic novel series of all time because of all the things happening beneath the surface. I've read the earlier books eight times now, and I notice new things with each reading.

I'm not a rabid Gaiman fan - I find him reliably enjoyable, but I've never really understood why so many people LURVE his writing. I think your point about not having layers is a good one - he's very good at creating unique characters and situations and telling stories, but less good about building the "metaphysical" framework to support those stories.
