Bookworms Carnival – Edition 23

February 20, 2009

in Book Events

Welcome to the 23rd Edition of the Bookworms Carnival! The Carnival, started by the late Dewey @ The Hidden Side of a Leaf, is a semi-monthly blog carnival that collects book blog posts centered on a particular theme.

This edition’s theme is “literature and film” or “books to movies,” which encompasses anything book and movie related: books adapted into movies, movies adapated from books, books about movies, movies about books, etc. Many of the entries submitted were from participants of the Lit Flicks Challenge. At the end of this edition, there is a meme for you to take back to your own blog to answer.

Pontifications on Our Theme

Wendymoon at Movie Viewing Girl analyzes the eternal question Book vs. Movie: Is the book always better? and then shares her thoughts on the book and movie verions of The Grapes of Wrath.

Sandra at Everybody Lies brings us her list of Thirteen Book Adaptations That Don’t Suck.

Amber Stults reports on the process of making James McBride’s book, Miracle of St. Anna, into a movie directed by Spike Lee.

Reviews of Movie Adaptations

Care from Care’s Online Book Club reviews The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie and finds that she liked the film better than the book.

Carrie from Mommy Brain considers the Brideshead Revisited DVD and compares the film to the source material – the famous book by Evelyn Waugh.

Heather at Age 30+ . . . A Lifetime of Books reviews the movie version of The Jane Austen Book Club and a TV version of Tess of the D’urbervilles.

Keira from Love Romance Passion analyzes why you should Become Smitten with Twilight’s Biting Appeal.

Book Reviews

Nymeth at Things Mean a Lot critiques H.G. Wells’s The Time Machine, which has been made into several movies.

Natasha from Maw Books Blog reviews two true stories about to be made into movies: What is the What and The Devil Came on Horseback.

Teddy Rose from So Many Precious Books, So Little Time shares her thoughts on Hawaii and Snow Falling on Cedars.

Alyce from At Home with Books reviews the perennial favorite 84, Charing Cross Road and the classic A Tree Grows in Brooklyn.

Jessica from The Bluestocking Society considers Daphne du Maurier’s Rebecca and Alfred Hitchcock’s adaptation.

Blake from Bitchin Film Reviews pontificates on Little Children, one of his favorite movies and books.

Sheri from A Novel Menagerie reviews The Readerthe book and the movie.

Meryl from My Bit of Earth evaluates both mediums in her reviews of Twilight and Brokeback Mountain.

I don’t really care if I read the book first or not. If the trailer catches my interest, then there is a good chance I’ll go see it. Now I can’t say that a movie has ever made me want to pick up the novels, but I will admit to some curiosity about the Bourne series by Robert Ludlum

Darn! I thought I emailed my carnival submissions in to you months ago. Guess I forgot. Great edition!! I admit that I prefer to read the book first, just because it tends to be more in-depth than the movie (seeing as it’s more than 2 hours of entertainment).
