April Helmbach was orphaned at four years old. Both of her parents were killed in a freak accident when one of their horses accidentally stepped in a yellow jacket nest. She hates horses and blames them for her parents’ deaths. Now thirteen and living with her aunt in Pennsylvania, her world changes when she is forced to help a horse away from a large car accident. In Rainy Day Rescue, we meet April, her Aunt Patti, her best friend Lowell, and her horse, Rainy Day. April starts to learn about the world of horses and puts Rainy Day to good use during the floods that plague her home town. In The Quarter Horse Foal, April gets a job at a nearby farm where she gets to witness the birth of and train a new foal. April also meets and makes friends with an Amish family in the neighborhood who need help.
The Saddle Wise series is good clean horse fun. I loved series as a kid and even read most of the installments of The Saddle Club. While there is nothing stunning or innovative in either writing or plot, the Saddle Wise series is just the kind of thing I loved when I was nine or ten – the same lovable characters and a little tension, but just a little. There wasn’t much here to hold my adult attention, but I can tell that these books would be a hit with the middle grade set.
