2010 – Reading Deliberately

January 4, 2010

in Book Events,Challenges

I’ve been thinking a lot about how I want to structure my reading in 2010. I primarily want to make progress on my own lists and goals and challenges.  I have felt swept away, at times, by the blogosphere and its contagious love for new books and challenges.  I love the recommendations and book hysteria that can sweep my reading off of its feet, but I’d like to refocus a bit this year. Apparently, I am not alone in this feeling; it seems that 2010 is officially going to be the year of reading deliberately.

I’ve selected twelve categories that I would like to focus on this year.  My goal is to read at least one book in each category.  Where possible, I’m also going to try and satisfy some categories while participating in blog events.  See?  Making the blogosphere work for me.  Here are my categories (with my progress updated throughout the year:

I’m so glad you’re reading deliberately too! I’m really enjoying it so far. I’m focusing on award winners, but I want to read classics too. Happy reading!

Lots of great ideas for reading in the New Year! The East of Eden read begins this month, though, not in March.

I’m not making a list of authors I want to read though I have been tempted. I want to read more by Steinbeck and Pulitzer prize winners but in drama too. The Steinbeck read-along is going on now. Only part one is due the 25th. Good luck with your goals for this year.

My resolution is to let my whims take over my reading. I’ll read whatever that interests me at the moment, and not to be limited by challenges and deadlines. I’ll be reading stuffs that are suitable for challenges but not joining them. I also have a stack of movies and BBC episodes that are based on novels. I would like to read the book and watch the adaptation. I’ll focus on NYRB series titles, Virginia Woolf, British novels, Booker Prize titles, and GLBT literature.

I don’t like to map out my reading too much because I know I won’t follow it but I have recently made a reading goal that I will be posting about Feb. 1.

I’m in! Not only reading deliberately, but buying used books judiciously for my store. Want to have the highest quality used books in Maine.
Current read: The Children’s Book by AS Byatt. (Wonderful & meaty) Next: After the Flood by Margaret Atwood. Also some old Gerald Durrell.
