50th Anniversary of To Kill A Mockingbird

alt=The 50th anniversary of the publication of To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, is today! As part of the celebrations, Harper Collins is inviting book lovers everywhere to share their ruminations on this pivotal tome.

I first read To Kill a Mockingbird sometime around the 6th grade. I don’t have a lot of specific remembrances about that first encounter, but I do remember liking the book. That positive recollection stayed with me for years. Then, two years ago, at the age of twenty-five, I reread it and posted a review here. I loved it (again). It is so well paced and is such a great story. As I said in that review, “there is nary a misstep in this book.” To Kill a Mockingbird is about families and race and misconceptions and the law and childhood and so much more. But, amazingly, it’s not preachy. And it has, I think, near-universal appeal. It can appeal to anyone of any age, sex, race, or education. If you haven’t read it, you should, post haste!

While the characters aren’t perfect, each of them inspires me in a different way. Atticus Finch inspires me to be a better lawyer, one who is willing to fight for a just cause. Scout inspires me to be more inquisitive and childlike. And Boo Radley inspires me to step up and step out of my comfort zone when others are in need. I definitely concur with those that dub this one of the best books of the 20th Century.

Check out the official anniversary site for celebrations all summer long. Also, if you’re a Facebook-er go ahead and check out the fan page. And go share your story on Twitter (in 140 characters or less) of how To Kill a Mockingbird has influenced your life. Use the hashtag #tkam.

Chrisbookarama – It’s one of my favorites!

Kathy – I’m guessing it’s on a lot of people’s “favorites” list. :)

I owe the appearance of my work to the society that honors Horton Foote, the brilliant screenplay writer of To Kill A Mockingbird. I just want to mention that he was good friends with Harper Lee, and the film is a work of art in its own right.

Shelley – This may shock you, but I’ve never seen the entire movie! It’s as well regarded as the book, and I need to see it soon! I’m glad you were so inspired by it.

Wisteria – I love the idea of summer rereads. I would like to reread this one soon; it’s been a couple of years.
