The Sunday Salon (1)

August 1, 2010

in Memes & Miscellany

Ahh.  Sunday reading thoughts.  I love it.  I haven’t ever participated in The Sunday Salon before, but I have a feeling I’m going to love it.  (I don’t even care that the official website is no longer accepting new members.)

I’ve been in a bit of reading flux lately.  I’ve had a very hard time finishing a book.  I’m currently in the middle of three books: THE PASSAGE; THE FORGOTTEN GARDEN; and EAT, PRAY, LOVE.  Even though I started EAT, PRAY, LOVE last, I’m hoping to finish it today.  I was hesitant to pick it up, because I’ve heard it described as chick lit memoir.  And I don’t really like either chick lit or memoir.  But Gilbert’s writing is very fresh and interesting.  I’ve been captivated.  (And, I admit, I kind of want to see the movie.  I love Julia Roberts.)

Let’s see . . . other bookish things.  Oh, yes.  I’ve been meaning to direct you all to a lovely story I read a while back in the Summer Fiction issue of The New Yorker.  It’s by Jonathan Safran Foer, and it’s called “Here We Aren’t, So Quickly.”  Maybe it spoke to me because I’m a divorce lawyer, but I thought it was the epitome of what a good short story can be.  Unfortunately, you can’t read the full story online without a subscription to The New Yorker.  But if you can get your hands on a copy of the June 14 & 21, 2010 issue, you should.

My little Daphne is almost six months old, and she is finally showing some interest in books.  Of course, she’d really rather eat them than read them, but we’re making progress.  So far, her favorites are Baby Faces and Colors. My favorite is The Pigeon Loves Things That Go.

Finally, a little plug for my upcoming series, Literature 101. The first “lecture” will be on genre and will be posted this Wednesday. If you’d like to know more, I introduce the series on my post, 10 Literary Concepts Every Reader Should Know. I hope you’ll join the class!

Have an excellent Sunday.

I’m hoping to read Eat, Pray, Love before the movie comes out too, so I’m glad to see you’re enjoying it. I’ve been avoiding it because I thought it was self indulgent.

Eat Pray Love and The Passage. What an interesting combination!

Yeah! I look forward to future Sunday Salons from you!

I’m thinking about reading Eat Pray Love before the movie. You’ve given encouragement because I’m sort of scared of that book!

How’s The Passage going?

Are you coming to the blogger party that will hopefully happen in a few weeks and bringing baby Daphne with so I finally see her? :)

Kathy – I could see how EAT, PRAY, LOVE could be described as self-indulgent, but it’s a memoir, so I kind of expected that. Also, Gilbert’s voice is engaging and has a splash self-deprecation. So, it’s working for me.

Christina – I agree. It is an interesting combination. There are two very different books.

Suey – Glad to be here in the salon! I haven’t finished EAT, PRAY, LOVE yet, but it has been a good, relaxed summer read for me. Nothing to be afraid of. THE PASSAGE is very slow going for me, but I get interrupted a lot. And, I will definitely try to come to the blogger party (possibly with Daphne). I emailed Natasha yesterday to see if I could help. But I forgot that you’re an organizer too. Do you need help?

Actually the first book of Heyer that I read was the Unfinished Clue. It was really good. I did not figure out who had done it.

Welcome to the Salon, even if the official page won’t recognize you. You’re already in my reader and Feedly, so I’ll be joining you each week and maybe at other times too, for example, for your upcoming series, Literature 101. I never read Eat, Pray and Love, but will be interested in hearing what you think. I believe my wife read it and I think she liked it.

Bluestocking – Thanks for the recommendation. I’ll see if I can find a copy of UNFINISHED CLUE for your Heyer celebration.

Unfinished Person – Thanks for the unofficial welcome. I’m excited about the new series and hope that you enjoy it. I didn’t get anywhere near finishing EAT, PRAY, LOVE today, but so far I am really liking it.
