R.I.P. Challenge

September 1, 2010 – October 31, 2010
Challenge: Peril the Second – Read 2 Books
Status: 3/2

___________________________________________

It’s time once again for Carl’s annual Readers Imbibing Peril Challenge. You know this is a must for me. This will be my third year of R.I.P., and it’s becoming entrenched as a lovely tradition each fall. For history’s sake, here are links to my R.I.P. VI post and wrap-up and my R.I.P. III post and wrap-up.

But first, head over to the challenge post for a rundown on the challenge options. I’m doing Peril the Second again this year, which entails reading at least two scary/gothic/mystery-ish type books.

Here’s my reading pool:

The Witches, by Roald Dahl (not pictured)
Dracula, by Bram Stoker
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, by Stieg Larsson (does this count?)
The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, by Robert Louis Stevenson
Northanger Abbey, by Jane Austen
Rebecca, by Daphne du Maurier (reread)
Jane Eyre, by Charlotte Bronte (reread)
And perhaps a few Ghost Stories

I can’t wait to get started! Are you R.I.P.ing this year? What books are in your pool?

Update:

I didn’t read any of the books from my pool, but I did manage to get to these R.I.P.-appropriate (ish) books:

City of Bones, by Cassandra Clare – 9/3/2010 (steampunk)

Matched, by Ally Condie – 9/30/2010 (dystopian)

Room, by Emma Donoghue – 10/10/2010 (okay, the first half, at least, is horror)

Ooooh you have so many good books! Rebecca, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and Northanger Abbey are all favorites of mine.

I started a book for RIP last night called Wait Until Twilight. It wasn’t even on my list but I saw it on my bookshelves and it seemed like a good choice.

that is a good list.. Jekyll & Hyde is pleasantly different from all the film versions I’ve seen of it; and it is a slim little volume. I read it after watching Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1931, dir. Rouben Mamoulian) for a film class–which was an experience in itself. I hope you enjoy it if you get to it.

I started Danielewski’s House of Leaves last night and had the strangest dreams. I think I will have to do this challenge in the afternoon hours only.

Of course Girl With the Dragon Tattoo counts! It’s so dark! And I love the idea of a Jane Eyre reread…great idea.

Jane Eyre and Rebecca are always good for a reread. I read them back to back pretty regularly. I am still working on my RIP list, but I’m excited the challenge is here at last!

I’ve had totally decided that I couldn’t possibly do any more challenges but now, looking at your pile of choices, I think I might given that I was planning on reading a couple of these myself yet this year. But then again, at a certain point, enough is enough and I may have already pushed myself too far!

Stephanie – I’ve never read NORTHANGER ABBEY, and I really need to change that!

Leslie – You’ve made me move DR. JEKYLL & MR. HYDE to the top of my list. And I’ll have to check out the movie too.

Kathy – Thanks!

Blake – I just might. I just might.

Michele – Whew! I’m glad to hear that THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO is R.I.P.-y. I wasn’t quite sure, and I really want to read it soon!

Jenny – I can’t wait to see your list. I think I’ll try to get to JANE EYRE soon, even if it’s after R.I.P.

Lisa – Maybe just wait and see if it happens organically. I know that over-extended feeling, and it tends to make my reading stressful.
