Roald Dahl Month

September 4, 2010

in Book Events

September is Roald Dahl Month, with Roald Dahl Day falling on his birthday – September 13th! Since the inimitable Roald Dahl is one of my favorite authors of all time, I’m going to try and reread a few of my favorites this month. Here’s what I’m hoping to read:

The Witches
James and the Giant Peach
The BFG

Some stories from The Best of Roald Dahl*

*Did you know Roald Dahl wrote many, many stories for adults? If you didn’t, you should obtain some, post haste! They are among my favorites of his works. I’m hoping to do a post about them toward the end of the month. For now, though, here’s a link to his most famous short story, Lamb to the Slaughter. (This will fit in nicely with R.I.P. reading.)

Did you enjoy Roald Dahl’s work? What’s your favorite?

I’ll always be partial to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

I love all of Roald Dahl’s kids’ books, but I’ve never read his adult stuff. My brother-in-law and his wife swear by his adult stories, so I really need to check them out.

As a kid, my family listened over and over to the Roald Dahl audio collection, where he reads some of his stories. “Fantastic Mr. Fox” was always my favorite. It’s just perfect, the way he reads it! My mother also read us “The BFG” many years ago, which we all loved. Dahl has such a great imagination.

Kathy – I do love CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY. It’s one of my favorites, but I’ve read it the most recently, so it didn’t make this month’s list.

Erin – I hope you do get a chance to read some of his adult stuff. It’s different, but really great. And I had no idea that he’d done some of his own audio books! I must track them down.

Teddy – I have a special place in my heart for JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH. I love James and that his parents got killed by hippos. The whole thing is perfect.

Nikki-ann – I love them all too. The BFG is high on my list of favorites. I love Sophie, and the BFG, of course, and the dreams.
