Are you looking for more excellent books to read? I think we all are. I personally love lists of excellent books. And Read This Next is a list of “500 of the best books you’ll ever read.”
Read This Next is divided into ten chapters: Love, Memoir, Family, History, Politics, Humor, Work and Money, War, Religion, and Death. And each section highlights twelve books that deal with the chapter’s subject, including a brief plot synopsis, some background information, and a few discussion questions. Then interpersed throughout each chapter are “Bonus Books” and “Read These Too” – related lists of books on topics ranging from “Food Books” and “Misery Lit” to “Books about Islam” and “Utopia Books.” And one of my favorite features, “List of One,” which highlights weighty tomes like In Search of Lost Time and Infinite Jest.
The tone of this one is a little more tongue-in-cheek than I generally like, but the lists are so good and helpful that I could let it slide. The authors’ enthusiasm for books comes through in each chapter and in each selection. There is a good mix of books included in each section too – old books, new books, non-fiction, fiction, classics, oscure works, literary fiction, fantasy, etc. The only genres that I noticed were under- or unrepresented were children’s books and YA books. However, you’ll find plenty here that you’ll want to read post haste. From just the first chapter on love, I added four books to my TBR list (and keeping it to only four took great restraint).
I think this book would be a nice addition to any book lover’s library. And, it happened to fall into my hands at a very opportune moment, as I have been asked to put together a neighborhood book club. This will be an invaluable resource for my book club, as well as for my own reading selections.
