One five-star book this month: The Handmaid’s Tale. Lots of excellent four-star reads this month too: An Abundance of Katherines, The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, Midnight Sun, The Thirteenth Tale, and Coraline. My pick of the month has to be An Abundance of Katherines. I know it got four stars, not five, but this is the book I’ll be rereading the most. Love the John Green.

Book Club

Bleak House, by Charles Dickens - Meeting: 10/23/2008

No one finished this month’s selection, so we continued the discussion to our next meeting.

Challenges

Ah, the cyclical challenge update. I completed the R.I.P. Challenge this month - barely. I finished up The Thirteenth Tale and Coraline on the 29th in order to complete my four books. I joined the Really Old Classics Challenge and am looking forward to my selections. At the same time, I quit the Wind-Up Book Chronicles Challenge. It ends on November 15, 2008, and I haven’t read a single one of my four selections. Sigh. Finally, I couldn’t resist adding another perpetual challenge - the Printz Project.

R.I.P. III - 4/4 COMPLETE!
The Wind-Up Book Chronicles Challenge - 0/4 [ends 11/15/2008]
The Classics Challenge 2008 - 1/6 [ends 12/31/2008]

Book Club

Rebecca, by Daphne du Maurier - Meeting: 9/25/2008

August Total = 11
Year-to-Date Total = 49

Two five-star books this month: 84, Charing Cross Road, by Helene Hanff (one of my top 10 favorite books ever) and The River, by Moonlight, by Camille Marchetta (a new favorite). Lots of excellent four-star reads this month too: The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, Looking for Alaska, The Mysterious Benedict Society and the Perilous Journey, and The Trouble with Poetry.

Book Club

Breaking Dawn, by Stephenie Meyer - Meeting: 8/28/2008

Our selection for this month, Breaking Dawn, was quite controversial. Everyone was generally pleased that the last book had arrived, but there was plenty to be dissatisfied with too. We discussed it all: the wedding, the honeymoon, the kid, the transformation, the imprinting, the “battle.” The overall consensus was: disappointing. The selection for next month is Rebecca, by Daphne du Maurier.

Challenges

There was lots of challenge action here this month. First, I completed the Olympic Challenge and won a $5 Amazon gift certificate from Annie for tying for silver! Also, I joined one more challenge, Carl’s R.I.P. III. Finally, and most adventurously, I’m hosting my very first challenge, the Lit Flicks Challenge - but more on that below.

The Olympic Challenge - 5 Gold Medals; 1 Silver Medal COMPLETE!
Lit Flicks Challenge - 0/5 [ends 2/28/2008]
R.I.P. III - 0/4 [ends 10/31/2008]
The Wind-Up Book Chronicles Challenge - 0/4 [ends 11/15/2008]
The Classics Challenge 2008 - 0/6 [ends 12/31/2008]
Book Awards II Challenge - 2/10 [ends 6/1/2009]
The Pulitzer Project - 7/91 [perpetual]
The Newberry Project - 12/87 (+7 Honor books) [perpetual]

Miscellany

I’m hosting my own challenge! I created the Lit Flicks Challenge in anticipation of the February 2009 Bookworms Carnival (also to be hosted by me). The theme of the carnival (and the challenge) is movies and books. Thus, the challenge asks participants to read five books that have been adapted into movies and to then watch two of the accompanying movies. (As I mentioned here, this challenge will likely fit in with the rest of your challenges and reading lists easily.) Also, my brother is hosting a companion challenge reversing the requirements for movie lovers here.

In other goings-on on this blog, I created a new Blue Leaf: The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, by Junot Diaz. All of the Blue Leafs available for download can be found here. I also completed a couple of memes about me and my reading habits. Also, I suffered a bout of book block. And, as always, I participated in Weekly Geeks and Booking Through Thursday.

Thanks to everyone who stopped by my blog this month!

The Mysterious Benedict Society, by Trenton Lee Stewart - 7/13/2008

Mariposa, by Candis C. Coffee - 7/15/2008

The Questory of Root Karbunkulus, by Kamilla Reid - 7/16/2008

Twilight, by Stephenie Meyer - 7/30/2008

New Moon, by Stephenie Meyer - 7/31/2008

July Total = 9

Year-to-Date Total = 38

Two five-star books this month: Twilight and The Mysterious Benedict Society. Wow. I probably wouldn’t have guessed that I would feel that way about Twilight on this reread. I think I gave it five stars because of the foundation it set for the rest of the series. The Mysterious Benedict Society is also the first of a series and quite delightful. The rest of the line of up received three or four stars. That’s a pretty good reading month - no duds.

Book Club

Stardust, by Neil Gaiman - Meeting: 7/22/2008

Our selection for this month, Stardust, was appreciated by the members of my book club. The discussion generally focused on a comparison of the book and the movie. We also briefly discussed The Host, by Stephenie Meyer and ruminated on whether it gave insight into the ending of Breaking Dawn. The selection for next month is, of course, Breaking Dawn, by Stephenie Meyer.

Challenges

I completed the Novella Challenge this month!

The Novella Challenge - 6/6 COMPLETE!

The Wind-Up Book Chronicles Challenge - 0/4 [ends 11/15/2008]

The Classics Challenge 2008 - 0/6 [ends 12/31/2008]

Book Awards II Challenge - 0/10 [ends 6/1/2009]

The Pulitzer Project - 6/91 [perpetual]

The Newberry Project - 12/87 (+7 Honor books) [perpetual]

Other

In other goings-on on this blog, I participated in two blog tours: Farworld: Water Keep, and The Questory of Root Karbunkulus, with accompanying interviews of J. Scott Savage and Kamilla Reid, respectively. I also reviewed two other ARCs: Mariposa and Monique and the Mango Rains. I changed my blogroll, leaving my top 15 favorite book blogs on the sidebar, and creating a List o’ Book Blogs for the rest of the gang. I also created three new Blue Leafs: Stardust, by Neil Gaiman, The Gathering, by Anne Enright, and The Goose Girl, by Shannon Hale. All of the Blue Leafs available for download are listed in the right sidebar. And, as always, I participated in Weekly Geeks and Booking Through Thursday.

I was also touched to be nominated for a blog award by three of my favorite book bloggers: Suey at It’s All About Books; Nari at The Novel World; and Unfinished Person at Just a (Reading) Fool. Thank you to each of you for your thoughtfulness and great blogging.

Finally, I had three giveaways this month! Suey at It’s All About Books won a signed copy of The Questory of Root Karbunkulus, and Shana at Literarily won a signed copy of Farworld: Water Keep. AND, the GRANDPRIZE WINNER of MY 100th POST CELEBRATORY GIVEAWAY is Rebecca Reid at Rebecca Reads!

Thanks to everyone who stopped by my blog this month!
